This post talks about the 360's inability to control its own disc drive and how it scratches discs.

If you call customer support you will be told "the console does not scratch discs unless repositioned or strongly vibrated while reading the disc." Msft used to never repair these consoles because they believed that the console did not scratch discs.

That being said, Msft will now repair your console for scratching your discs if you believe the console is at fault.

--some speculation--

There were reports of a bad run of core consoles at one point that lacked the ability to hold the disc in the disc tray when the console is in a vertical position. Why? The piece that holds the disc in in the vertical position was loose or missing on some cores and it caused the disc to spin out and scratch.

If your console is scratching your discs, make sure it's not in a vertical position. Lay it flat; make sure it's on a level surface and not near any loud subwoofers which might cause vibrations.

If your console continues to scratch your disc call into customer support to get it repaired.
